From his earliest memory as a child seeing an IBM 386, Roberto Vieira knew exactly what he wanted to be: an engineer. He says, “The moment I saw it, I wanted to be able to understand how it worked and to create with it.”

Since that time, Roberto has worked creatively with technology for more than 15 years as an engineer, and now he’s joined Virtually Human Studio (VHS) as its Head of Engineering.

Prior to joining VHS, Roberto was the Head of Technology & Director of Engineering at Wargaming Sydney for three years. But his impressive resume doesn’t stop there. For more than 10 years Roberto has led tech teams in various areas including software development, game technology development and game development in countries including the US, Spain, and Australia.

While he’s been involved in the development of iconic games like Candy Crush, Pet Rescue, Bubble Witch and Paradise Bay, Roberto says, there is something unique happening here with ZED RUN.

“What excites me the most is that this will be just the beginning of immersive, democratised experiences that will go beyond entertainment. We do great tech and I’m excited to take VHS’s engineering team from ‘great’ to ‘awesome’ by supporting continuous improvement and addressing some of our blind spots. ZED RUN has everything that I love about engineering — solving challenging problems that are never the same,” he says.

CEO & Co-Founder Chris Laurent says, “Roberto’s diverse background strengthens our engineering team, enabling greater focus as we blaze the trail of immersive entertainment experiences leveraging technology. He will be defining and growing our tech strategy while delivering increasingly valuable outcomes that will shape the way we connect and engage with communities around the world.”

Outside of work, you’ll find Roberto at the beach, dog sitting or supporting the local gaming industry. Over the years Roberto has participated in a number of different panels at the University of Technology Sydney and the Academy of Interactive Entertainment to engage with the next generation of software engineers.

In October, Roberto will be presenting some of his lessons in managing underperformance at Games Connect Asia Pacific, the region’s biggest networking and development conference in the gaming industry.
